Paul Cranny Travel in association with Leger Coach Holidays is proud to offer 4 great ways to visit the famous Oberammergau Passion Play 2020

Once again, the world-famous Passion Play returns to the beautiful village of Oberammergau for its 42nd performance. Why not make 2020 the year you experience this ‘play of life and death’, combined with the beauty of Bavaria, Germany, Austria and Italy on one of our FULLY-ESCOURTED TOURS.

About The Play

In The Beginning

The year was 1663 and the Bubonic Plague was powering through Germany. In the small village of Oberammergau the death rate was rising fast. Out of desperation the villagers prayed to God. They promised him that if they were spared further heartache they would perform a spectacular play in his honour. The play would depict the life and death of Jesus, and they would perform it every ten years …… for ever.

Over the course of the next couple of months the death rate decreased to virtually none, and the villagers believed they had been saved by God. Out of thanks, and as they had promised, they began work on fulfilling their vow and in 1663 performed their first ever Passion Play.

In 1663, out of thanks, they made good on their promise and staged their first ever play dedicated to the glory of the almighty.

Is Now And Forever Shall Be

That was nearly 400 years ago. Since then, every 10 years, the villagers have kept their word, and the play has been performed thousands of times. Today it draws millions of people from all over the globe and is undisputedly the most famous play of it’s kind.

For Your Information

Whilst the play is presented in the German language, you do not have to speak German to appreciate this spectacle. As one audience member put it …..

We saw the play in 2010. Yes, it is in German, but we had no trouble understanding the performance. You are given a book with the dialogue translation in different languages, including English. It is possible to see it in the theatre, as it is dim inside rather than completely dark. Some people had very small, discreet pen page lights, but we didn’t bother too much with the book. The music and singing is so good that I just wanted to watch the performance, as it was clear what the action was most of the time. I would encourage any arts-lover to go, even if you’re not particularly religious, as it is an amazing artistic performance. We are planning to go again in 2020.
